According to the website "Windows XP A to Z":
Open regedit.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
you'll find "IsShortcut registry value." Delete it.
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile
and delete the IsShortcut registry value.
Your system may have to be restarted.
Sometimes deactivating the arrow for *.LNK files might cause duplicate items in the
Explorer Context menu.
There is some contention on whether or not this method will crash the system. I tried
it on mine (Server 2003 R2) and it worked fine, but back up your registry (or set
a restore point, or make sure you've got a PE ready with an offline hive editor ready)
just in case.
Another suggested method (which I haven't tried) is to go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInternetShortcut
and delete the IsShortcut registry value.
