I have a HP a250n with Windows XP Home and SP2. two weeks ago I had to do a system
recovery and somehow I lost all my audio. Everything would be grayed out under Sound
and Audio Devices, it would say No Audio Devices, and of course I would get the no
mixer devices error. I have a Realtek AC97 driver which said it was enabled but not
functioning properly. And under my Services my Windows Audio would be set to automatic
and Started. after uninstalling it multiple times from the device manager and reinstalling
it, I managed it to say Enabled but Not Started.
Still no audio with everything grayed out. Just when I was about to give up, I solved
it -:) here is how:
1- open device manager
2- click sound and video game controls
3- my reinstalled audio driver realtec ac97 was there among some audio and video
codec and legacy drivers.
4- click on View tab and check "show hidden devices"
5- I saw about 15 other audio devices there some repeated three times. Uninstall
all of these even the ones that say Microsoft Kernel ...
6- after I uninstalling all of them Windows started reinstalling these itself, I
just had to click ok for the digital signature. OH MY GOD, I heard a beep from my
speakers.
7- I went to the Sounds and Audio devices and no more grayed out sections, everything
was back to normal. I have audio again.
