Did it need the update to break? :) I ask because the AC'97 device has been spontaneously disappearing from my laptop since I got it in 2004 - the first time it happened was before I applied any upgrades. The only cure I've found is to shut down completely and boot up again, or uninstall the damn thing via Device Manager and then reinstall it.
