As for running the program, you only need to do it when the date doesn't show on mouse over. It shows most of the time for me but when it doesn't, a single click fixes it (tiil the next time). I suspect this is not something that can be fixed easily or MS would already have done so (MS, like many other companies, loves easy fixes :=) ).
