I know this thread is extremely old, but it helped me just the same. I'm running
xp, so I don't know if vista will be the same. My other machine was an easy fix
(setting the mouse's power options to "do not allow this device to bring out of standby"),
but my other computer refused to go into s3 sleep mode no matter how many different
things I tried. I changed the USB device power settings, I set the bios to S3 mode,
I altered the registry, I altered the power settings to minimal power settings, yet
none of these options silenced the drone of the fans. It seems that if you install
Windows without S3 enabled, it will not automatically set it as the default no matter
which common settings you tinker with. Finally, I stumbled upon the link http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=10770,
which will lead you to the program dumppo.exe. This little DOS program will force
your comp. to use S3 sleep mode. You'll need a little experience with DOS to run
it, but it's easy for the most part. Just make sure the directory matches the directory
you've saved dumppo.exe into and type the command in the instructions. Let me know
if this saves anyone some time! Time is all you have on earth, and spending it on
Windows is more painful than prison!
