I was trying to install a Western Digital PCI Firewire card. This in an IBM Thinkpad
running Windows XP Home. I had been working on this issue off and on for several
months. The registry tweak did not work for me. I tried everything else I could
think of including installing the registry entries and drivers from another Thinkpad
that I own. In desparation, I reinstalled XP Home and that fixed everything. Plugged
in the card the the driver automatically installed.
The reinstall of Windows XP will perserve all your current data and settings however,
you will need the original install disc and the registration number. If you're not
comfortable with the reinstall process there is an article on reinstalling XP Professional
at http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/. The procedure for reinstalling
XP Home is a little different but if you boot from the install CD it will lead you
through the process.
