If the computer is a recognizable name brand, when new it probably came from its
manufacturer with a MS OS preinstalled--if so, it's very likely that it is still
licensed to run that OS.

In any case, look for an approx 1" x 3" colorful label on the side, back or top (or
bottom if a lappy). This would be the MS Certificate of Authenticity that would
tell you what the computer came with originally. 99% of the time you are still legally
able to run that OS.

Post back and let us know.
