My computer can't do a cold boot, but works fine if I leave it on.

My computer works fine if I leave it on for weeks on end and just restart every few
days or so. However, when I shit it off and try to do a cold boot, it acts like it
can't find the hard drive.
The only workaround I have found to this problem is this: I drive to my nearest Geek
Squad location, talk to the salesman, take my computer back home without having had
it fixed, plug everything back in, and it boots up wonderfully. The whole process
takes about an hour. How this works, I have no idea, but it does as I have done it
three or four times now.
I tried unplugging everything while at home and just leaving the computer off for
an hour, and then plugging everything back in, but that didn't work as I still had
the same problem. Also, PC-cillin 2007 does not detect any boot viruses.
Any suggestions as to what I should do about this would be greatly appreciated. I
don't even know if it's a boot isue, a software issue, or a hardware issue.
