XP Pro SP2 Hangs At Welcome Screen

Greetings,
Running XP Pro SP 2 with all current updates on my IBM Thinkpad z60m. A couple of
days ago I did some updates from IBM and this morning . . .
Hangs during start up at the Welcome screen.
Boots ok into Safe Mode.
Any ideas on how best to proceed?
