The laptops staying connected makes me think of hardware first. If your router has 
several ports, move the cable to another. Next, replace the cable. Finally, look 
at the network card UNLESS you have the router connected via USB.
If that is the case, you could try removing any other USB devices, but I would pull 
that cable and connect via the ethernet connection. If you have firewire ports (on 
the PC and the router) it will be faster, but I cannot predict reliability. Furthermore, 
the (firewire) cable will cost more and your ISP probably does not meet/exceed the 
100Mbps speed of a standard ethernet port.
