Freezing problem on boot

If I stay connected to the Internet (DSL) and shut down or restart the computer it will freeze at the Windows loading screen , however if I turn off the internet before shutting down or restarting then it will start up fine. Also if , after shutting down, I turn the machine off via the main rear switch for about 4 sec. and then turn it on it will boot up fine. Any thoughts ?
