Another response suggested you can't do what you write about. Wireless NICs can operate
as "ad-hoc" networks, but doing so exposes your machine to compromise, even if it's
on your own network. You also mention that your laptop is directly connected to your
broadband modem. That potentially exposes your machine to the big bad internet.
If
you want to kill two birds with one stone, pick up a wireless router, like the Linksys
WRT54G, which is often on sale at less than $60. It will provide a hardware firewall
for your laptop and all other machines on your network. It will also solve the issue
of providing an access point for internet sharing.
Remember, even if you
do set up your laptop to share the connection, it has to be on to do so.
