I had the same problem until I uninstalled the sound driver, uninstalled the pnp,
deleted the 2 files previously mentioned. rebooted. reinstalled the pnp enumerator.
The last problem was that HP defines the soundriver as Conexant when in fact it
was a Via Composite Audio. I downloaded the drivers from Via and had no more problems.
This was on an HP ZE1210 Viaarena led me to the correct chipset info with How to
identify your PC components using SiSoftware Sandra at http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=5&ArticleID=90
