OK. I looked at the bios for Parallel Port Type, but this particular computer didn't 
have SPP (I do remember seeing this in some other computers that I've used) as one 
of the options.   Anyway, it was set to ECP originally and switching to EPP resolved 
the problem!  Thanks, appleoddity!
