Context menus take ages to appear

XP Pro machine that is a member of a domain. Works fine in the office. But if you
take it home and log in under the domain account, when you right-click on files it
takes maybe 10 seconds for the context menu to appear. Other operations such as deleting
files are similarly affected.
Problem is the same whether the PC is connected to the home network or not. By monitoring
the network packets, it seems that when you right-click on a file, it tries to find
the domain controller, and waits for a few seconds before giving up and finally dispalying
the menu.
Any way of fixing this behaviour?
