Open a command prompt. Use the ren command with the * wild card and double quotes. For instance, if the file is

"this is a very long file that I am having trouble renaming so I don't know what to do.avi"

You would enter

ren "this is a very*.avi" newfile.avi

You just have to use enough of the filename so XP can differentiate it form other files in the same directory.
