MS Word - new text writes through existing text

When using MS Word occasionally something strange happens - when I put the cursor in the middle of some text to add a new word or letter, it writes through the text in front of it instead of shifting it along. This doesn't happen all the time, it comes and goes, but I can't figure out what it is I'm doing that causes it to start. Does anybody know how to stop this?
