If you're not using Java now or anything dependent on it then uninstalling it can't hurt and is worth a try. You can, as you say, reinstall it later if needed. Other than that, every once in a while it's easier to save important files and do a clean install of XP and applications rather than hunting down and trying to delete hundreds or thousands of old entries.
