Skipping sounds

I recently bought a new laptop that had Windows Vista on it, I successfully downgraded
it back to XP because I didn't want vista. However, since I've downgraded I've been
noticing my music (seems to only happen when listening to music, doesn't effect other
sounds such as system sounds, sounds from the 'net, games, etc.) will play normally
for a bit, then every so often it makes a weird sound, almost sounds like if you
were listening to an audio tape and it hit a bad spot in the tape, a scrambling sound.
It will do this more than once in a song. I've tried other songs too same result.
It's really annoying and I haven't had better results trying a different media player
either, tried both windows media player and winamp. Out of the two I would think
Winamp would be less stressful on the system resources... not that a dual core CPU
couldn't handle it.
I don't seem to have this problem on Vista unfortunately =( I really don't wanna
switch back to Vista just so I can listen to my music if I can help it.
Here are my system specs if anyone needs them:
Athlon 64 X-2 @ 1.8 Ghz (TK-55)
1 Gig of RAM (PC2 5300)
GeForce 7150M Mobile
Conexant HD Sound card
Thanks for any help in advance. If you need more on the system specs other than what
i've provided, I'll be happy to post.
