I ran chkdsk c: /p and it worked - many thanks.

I assume I do not have to bother with the fixboot and fixmbr commands - if I'm 
wrong, let me know.

Just curious, why did this error happen?  Was it because the machine was turned off 
via a flipped breaker?

Thank you again Rich, your help was greatly appreciated by my step-father.
