The issue here isn't old hardware but new. I can hardly hear the drive at all, but the drive has a built in fan. Even the slightest access, like reading one byte of information from the disk, will cause the fan to activate. That fan will then run for three minutes. This is a sharp contrast to the 30 seconds the CPU fan runs every half hour or so. Some random windows process is accessing some random file every 4-5 minutes, and so there is very little 'quiet time'. I'm thinking that I should move the whole os onto a USB flash drive to avoid this. The three minute fan wouldn't bug me if it only ran when I was starting up a program like photoshop, or saving a file. but this constant XP file checking has the fan running all the time for no reason, and the temp monitors seem to indicate that there is actually no reason to run the fan, other than that the os instructed it to do so.
