Weird Internet connection issue

My PC blue-screened recently and I had to run a chkdsk to get it back - which worked.
Since then my dialup connection has disappeared, replaced by a network adaptor connection
(which I don't want and haven't used before).

If I run the Internet Connection Wizard, clicking the next button on screen two does
nothing (i.e having chosen that I want to set up a new dial up connection, it won't
let me go on - in fact no matter which of the radio buttons you select it won't let
you go on to the next screen.) If I trying to go through the browser - options -
connections route, it won't allow me to add a new connection there either.

If I try using any of the programmes that previously accessed the internet, none
works AND some say that they couldn't find a modem. If I Device Manager the modem,
it says it's there and working properly - if you interrogate it, it also come back
as present and happy.

Anyone any ideas what's going on and what's stopping ICW going on - does it also
think I don't have a modem?

Thanks,

Zak
