Question about 'When I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer hangs at the "Please Wait" screen'

When I try to close down my computer, a message comes up saying 'ending program please
wait, but there is no program running. Please, can anyone help me solve this problem,
I would be most grateful.
