Microsoft Software Distribution Service 3.0

On Dec 12 2007, without my knowledge, Microsoft apparently loaded something on my
computer called "Software Distribution Service 3.0." I found it because after that
date, I could not double-click on a .doc file, an .xls file or an .exe file and make
it open. After puzzling for a couple of weeks, I decided to do a system restore.
My computer says that on 12/12/2007 "Software Distribution Service 3.0" was loaded--no
clue it was from Microsoft. I restored to before that date and my double-click problem
was fixed.
A Google search revealed that this is a Microsoft program (or virus?) but nobody
knows much about it, except that it has caused other reported problems.
I looked on my other computer, and it was installed there also, without my permission,
on 12/16/2007. (The only evidence of it being installed that I could find is by looking
at my System Restore points.) Fortunately, nothing seems to have broken on that
computer.
What is this and how do I protect myself against such an unwelcome intrusion?
