Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at 6:29 pm Windows XP Annoyances Discussion Forum Posted by gahelton (2 messages posted) The Device Manager disappeared on my machine after installing SP2. This is a problem with file "fixccs.exe" in the install pack. Execution of this file creates garbage in the registry under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\ENUM which disables the Device Manager view. Microsoft has a hotfix which will correct the registry problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914450 Go to Microsoft at this link http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6294451 and request the fix be emailed to you. They will send you a self-extracting exe file. Run this file. It will extract another self-extracting file "WindowsXP-KB914450-v2-x86-ENU.exe". Run this file to extract the new "fixcss.exe". Run "fixcss.exe" to repair the registry. Make sure that all of your spy protection software is disabled before running the fix. Good Luck.
