I've spent a couple days getting XP on one computer to connect with 98SE on another!
A lot of good suggestions on this page, so I'm not sure exactly what did it - It
finally worked when I rechecked my home-made crossover cable and dicsovered I had
to switch 2 pairs of wires (Green and Orange, White/Orange and White/Green) instead
of just one. There are 2 standards for this cableing - 568A and 568B. A crossover
cable has A on one end and B on the other.
