I have had trouble with the long waiting time between typing in the logon-password
and the startup of Windows, too. Tried *everything* suggested in here and didn't
manage to fix it.
Then I scanned some other windows help sites in detail and found this tool. I didn't
find it before during my extensive web searches, maybe because of the words this
person used to describe the problem/fix.
If you follow this link:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fix_xp_logon.htm
you'll be able to download a small but extremely helpful little application (see
explaining text there).
It did just what it promised to do. I was sceptical at first, since it seemed such
a minor change. But when I rebooted, there was almost no delay between the logon
process and windows appearing. Amazing!
In my case some kind of Intel program had replaced the file in question (msgina.dll)
with one of its own - no clue why, makes me pretty mad.
Hope it'll work for you!
