I've got a similar problem on my XP Pro running HP Omnibook nx6100 laptop.
I have a HP8550DN printer on my network, and last weekend this laptop decided that
the printer "wasn't there" anymore. I could see the printer's webpage, the management
software on the laptop was quite happy working with the printer.
I ran a reg clean, just in case there was a problem there. I deleted every printer,
and attempted to re-install the driver.
It happily installed all of the other printers on machines on our network. But now,
when I try to install the HP8550, it just appears to freeze. The spoolsrv process
is running at 90+%, the CPU fan has gone into overdrive. If I kill the process, the
installation of the printer suddenly appears to be complete - would I like it to
be my default printer? I click yes, the next, and up pops an error. IE: it didn't
install it.
I've run sfc /scannow with no problems reported.
I've tried all of the "published" fixes - deleting temporary spool files, etc..
I still can't get this blasted printer re-installed on this laptop.
Any ideas?
Rob.
