Altho old forum of 2002, turns up first in my Google search of 2008 -so I thought
to see if this helps....

Found magazine article from 'Smart Computing' (Use Direct Cable Connection To Share
Files Across PC, Jan. 2004) that suggests DCC (Direct Cable Connection), a free Win98
Utility. DCC is included with Win98, but it is not part of the default installation.
For Win98 to XP it also suggests going to http://support.microsoft.com for Article
814981 - which appears to be in eight parts...

Good descriptive 'Hardware 101' info as well about direct cabling hardware and the
ports. Suggests using parallel to parallel port connective cable and tells you why.
I am going to try it - I have a perfectly fine HP Pavilion celeron running Win98
2nd ed. 4.10.2222 A with from what I can tell the last of the support updates that
will ever be available, with 7 years worth of files on it. BUT its now 2008 and
MS 'requires' me to use newer Win OS and don't feel Win Vista is ready, plus need
more room because each 'new' MS OS needs a zillion times more hardware power. So,
as interim solution, making Win XP Pro on used IBM ThinkCentre as my primary PC,
and want to move some of my MS Office, Outlook, and photo/art files from the HP to
the IBM - and hopefully use the HP as another 'archive' server on a hardwired network
for awhile.....and I don't want to screw around with zip or USB flash drives since
many of the old files I may never need, but I want to be able to get them quickly
if I find I need them. Eventually I may have $$ to buy external drives (or more
zip disks or flash) and make the time to review and archive it all-but I want the
flexibility and be able to 'transition' at my own pace.
Wish me luck, and I will report back on how it goes!
