Before posting my solution, I will explain my problem in detail since it seems to
me that some folks posting here may have been experiencing slightly different issues.
My problem seems to be consistent with that of the original poster.
My problem: After each reboot and FIRST login(I am using a username/password), only
a few of the taskbar icons load in a timely manner(from 2-3 whole minutes). The
first few icons load quickly. Also during this period, a peak at the process list
in task manager reveals that 1) no process is using any CPU time and 2) all processes
except "system idle" don't yet have username populated. As noted earlier in the
forum, the icons can be forced to load by killing and restarting explorer.exe AND
the problem does not come back with more user LOGINS to Windows, only the first after
a restart.
More notes:
- problem occurs after a clean OS install(XP Pro w SP2)
- only hardware drivers are loaded
- no antivirus software or other software loaded yet
- problem only occurs once at startup.
Solutions attempted:
- I attempted ALL of the solutions listed below(all are from earlier in this forum
posting) with no luck. Note that I consider some of the posts to be "workarounds"
rather than solutions since they have to be done every time and don't prevent the
problem.
1) reinstalling LATEST drivers for ALL hardware
2) disabling UPnP and SSDP services
3) adding systray.exe to the ..\Run registry entry
4) adding registry entry
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoTrayItemsDisplay"=dword:00000000
5) Hide icons for networked UPnP devices
6) remove setupapi.dll from system folder
7) using regcleaner to remove startup items
The SOLUTION that worked for ME:
- Disabling the service that was created by the NVidia graphics driver. (NVidia Display
Driver Service)
- I used MSCONFIG and went to "Service" tab and chose "hide all microsoft services"
to see just what had been added after the OS install. (I had just reinstalled my
OS, so my list was only one item long and the culprit was easy to find.
I downloaded the latest driver available from my manufacturer and NVidia and some
other sites, but the problem remained. This service was the culprit and must have
been loading after the taskbar icons that loaded OK, but before the rest. By the
way disabling the service seems to have not prevented anything from working properly.
Hopefully this will help someone else who's been struggling with this same issue
and tried everything else.
P.S. I'm running XP Tablet PC edition on an Acer TravelMate C310 with an NVidia
GeForce Go 6200. And I did try a clean install of XP Pro and had the same problem
as I did with XP Tablet edition.
