I already deleted lot of programs from my startup list (Run-msconfig-Startup tab)
to speed up start up. But below are some items I don't know what are for and can
I delete them as well without repercussions:
ashDisp F:\PROGRA~1\ALWIL5~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe
DELL\MMKB F:\WINDOWS\DELLMMKB.EXE
sqtray F:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sqtray.exe/r
QXTask F:\Program Files\Quick Time\QTTask.exe"-atboottime
mm_Tray F:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe
ctfmon F:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe
CheckIt86 F:\PROGRA~1\CheckIt\86\CHECKI~1.EXE
Location: For first 6 programs location is:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
For CheckIt86 the location is Common Startup
Note: F: is my primary harddisk.
Now:
ashDisp I presume it is for the avast! virus scanner I use so probably I should
keep it on the start up list
DEL/MMKB so what is this for? I have a DELL Dimension 8200 1.7 Ghz PC and I presume
this MMKB came with the installation programs. But do I still need it? And what is
it really for, what it suppose to do?
sqtray Sonic Update Manager? It is for Sonic MyDVD for creating, editing, transfering
DVDs. Frankly I never used it. I presume I should take it off from the Start List.
I can start it up whenever I want to use it. Correct?
QXTask This is for QuickTime which I use with other progs. But do I need it on
the start list? Can I just start it manually whenever I need it? But would I remember
how? Good question.
mm_tray MUSICMATCH Jukebox. I don't use it...period. But I remember I deleted it
from the Start List before
(unchecked box and restart PC) But it seems it just keep coming back to the Taskbar.
Stubborn little bugger.
ctfmon Now what does this do? I know it is for WINDOWS\system32 but is it necessary
for ctfmon to start up automatically, wouldn't the regular turning on the PC do
the same?
CheckIt86 If I recall correctly, this is a pop-up blocking program provided originally
by the Internet Provider (COX). So it is useful and probably should be left alone.
But why do I need to start it with the regular turning on the PC why could it not
be connected to the browser to run only when I am on the Internet?
So please provide your thoughts and instructions. Pls keep it simple, I am not a
techie.
Thank you.
