Here are some ideas:

1. Run a search on this and the other Annoyances forums - your question is regularly 
discussed
2. Polish up your Googling skills - there's tons of information out there
3. Try looking through the malware forums - more relevant than one specialising in 
XP problems - plenty of pointers to them in this forum
4. Give some of the free antivirus apps a try - there's a lot of 'taste' involved 
in making a selection
