Wow, what an amazing post! I have a HP P4 3.2GHz machine that I recently upgraded
with some new hardware and a completely clean Win XP install.
A week or so back I noticed that when the machine went into Standby the fans were
still running, something I hadn't been aware of before, but just put it down to the
unit needing to cool down or something, or maybe because of the time and effort I'd
put into the rebuild I was just more observant.
Anyway, once I'd become aware of it, it really started to bug me, and I was SURE
it hadn't been like that before! So I started digging around for info, learning about
the various Standby states, Registry settings, hacks etc... and when I found this
discussion late last night, USB device power settings and the way Microsoft likes
to do things!
I have a cordless desktop, and had taken the keyboard and trackball sensors off their
PS2 adapters and plugged them directly into the USB ports on the back of the case,
running everything else through a new Hub. Sure enough, when I looked in Device Manager,
they were checked to allow wake-up from Standby!
So, I unchecked the keyboard, put the trackball back on its PS2 adapter, and when
I go into Standby... SILENCE, with no fans running (and I can obviously wake from
Standby with the trackball). What a ridiculously SIMPLE solution to a problem that
had been bugging the crap out of me!!! :)
Thanks guys for a great post!
