Browser Hijacked! Help

Need to help a friend who has WIndows XP machine running the latest version and I.E.
7. His machine has been infected and a pop up message comes on every time I.E. is
opened and basically states - Browser has been Hijacked - to clean it up, click on
... Seems that it the same outfit that infected the machine is trying to sell them
an online fix. What are the latest tools to clean up the machine?
