Windows Update Installation Failure

Using Windows Update, none of the shown available updates will install on my computer.
No failure code is given, only that the items failed to update. If I go to the
Windows Update page and look at Update History, no failures are listed. The last
installation listed - a successful one - was ver. 3.1 of the Windows Installer.
I have searched Microsoft TechNet, but there is no specific advice for a condition
of no error code. Now what do I do?
