Adding External Hard Drive

My wife's computer is loaded with photos, and she is getting message now that Photoshop
Elements may not work right because she is out of space on her hard drive. Am I
right in assuming that plugging an external hard drive in will solve that problem?
Is it simply that easy to do? The PC has USB ports. What else do I need to know
or think about?
She is reluctant to delete things...what can I say.
