running DOS program in XP

I have a couple of DOS programs I still depend on. I've been using them on my new
XP machine without incident. That is, until today. I opened one of the programs and
it hung before painting the welcome screen. All I got was a black screen with a blinking
cursor. I was able to ALT-TAB back to XP and force-close. I tried the other program
and got the same result. This seems to eliminate issues with DOS properties settings.
I rebooted and all was fine. I figured it was some sort of glitch. However, a few
hours later, it happened again.
Anyone have an idea what may be going on here?
