If the laptop has been used in a non-dusty environment, and the fans are cycling, I would leave it alone. Laptops do run pretty hot, and the fact that the fan is not always on demonstrates that it is coping. The machine should be protecting itself from overheating (it will shut itself down, when you will know there's an issue).

On the other hand, opening the machine might invalidate any warranty, often needs special tools and can easily cause damage, or dislodge connections in the crowded space in the case.
