i have a gateway m520 laptop with windows xp home. i got the above message yesterday (screen is black) and says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows root\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file." tried to reboot in safe mode. received the same error. do not have any original disks from manufacturer, as they were lost in a recent move. what are my options? i should mention that i am computer illiterate. thanks in advance for your help and expertise.
