Karen, The news is not good. HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is pretty fundamental. Probably, the most straightforward route for you will be to purchase a recovery CD from Gateway. You will lose all your own files if you go down this route. For what its worth, your issue is described here If you have a computer literate friend, and can borrow an XP CD, they may be able to either: Perform a repair/install for you, or Boot to the Recovery Console, then run this command: Expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll (change "d" to whatever letter your CD drive uses) Good luck.
