Internet randomly stops working

hi there
i connect to the internet via a wireless usb adapter, at random intervals it will
just time out and are unable to use the internet, when it has timed out, i check
the status of the wireless icon ( the icon is showing as connected) and it reports
back saying speed: 54.0 mbps signal strength: excellent status: connected.
i then check the router and all the correct lights are on, power, status, adsl, wireless
.
what could be causing this problem?, i have tried another wireless usb adapter and
get the same results, many thanks (its is a windows xp machine )
