New build not finding hard drives with XP

Hi Everyone. I have just about finished building my new computer but I am stuck.
When I start the computer it boots to Asus boot menu and I can alter that, but when
I just let it run, it asks if I want to boot windows normally. I hit enter and it
says no hard drives found and restarts.
My mother board is an ASUS M3A32-MVP with a AMD X2 6400+ processor.
when I go into the Bios settings it shows the hard drive with XP on it and it shows
the dvd drive. I have altered the boot sequence but that did not help. My hard drive
is an IDE drive and the motherboard only has 1 IDE plug and everything else is SATA,
which I do not have a Sata drive yet.
A friend told me I need to format the hard drive to work with the new system but
I really do not see how that will make the motherboard recognize the hard drive with
Xp on it. The book says it will work with XP operating system.
other things that you may want to know if it helps.
2 gig 1066mhz ram
NVidia 8800gts
Zalman cooler
550 watt power supply ( updating soon)
120 gig Western digital HD
160 gig Western digital HD
Can anyone help me??
Thanks Bill
