Why no sound?

My PC runs Windows XP. I can use Windows Media Player to listen to music. I can use
audio instant message. *.wmv running from WMP is fine. VCD files run fine.
But some other applications do not produce sound. They are: Power Point slides (pps),
YouTube, and some online video files. How do I fix the problem?
