This may or may not help anyone but worked for me, I was getting:
"Explorer.exe application error The instruction at "xxxxxxxxx" referenced memory
at "xxxxxxxx". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program."
I was getting this when clicking on the C:\ drive, but could access parts of the
drive through cmd no problem.
After trying lots of stuff that failed to work, I will list what I did that did work.
1. First thing I did was NOT to close the error box. Closing this box caused explorer
to exit and the whole merry go round to start again. At least it wasn't shutting
for me till I clicked "ok".
2. Next thing is to make a new folder on the desktop, and make shortcuts of all
folders in C: (or wherever your problem manifests itself) beginning with the letter
"a" inside this new folder.
3. Then click ok on the error box, so explorer restarts.
4. Now click on your new folder and see if it duplicates. If it does, then you
know its one of these "A" folders that is rogue, and you can exclude (hopefully)
everything else.
5. If it doesn't replicate the error, start the process again but this time with
folders beginning with "b". I was lucky, I found a folder of shortcuts labelled
"audio" had gone rogue and I just deleted it, then remade shortcuts from the program
files.
6. If it is another more important folder, you should repeat the process, with the
different folders within, and track the rogue down.
This is potentially labourious, especially if you have more than one rogue, but as
I say it worked for me, and quite quickly too.
