msconfig is mainly used to troubleshoot problems, but there is no reason not to use it to disable the things in the startup tab especially if there is any chance you might change your mind. It is a lot easier and safer than editing the registry, and is a nice central location for enabling/disabling start up items no matter where the information is stored imo. It's pretty safe to disable anything that is on that tab, but it could cause things to work differently than they did before. If you want to see if you can improve performance by disabling start up items you can try, It's Most Likely harmless and easily reversible. The safest thing to do would be to disable any processes you find in the list from the programs that create them. If you don't want to do that if you google the processes and understand them you could be better off. The decision to leave something checked or unchecked has a lot to do with personal preference anyway. Otherwise (this isn't the safest solution) you can uncheck them all or uncheck them one by one and just see what happens. Getting a popup that says something along the lines of "you have used the system configuration utility...." is normal and it's ok to just check the box telling it not to display the message again. I don't remember how to disable visual effects in 2000, but maybe that could help too, and if you feel like doing some reading blackviper.com might have some good information for disabling unnessecary services. Just remember computers are pretty complex and anything is possible if you're experimenting and it is safest to have back ups of anything that you don't want to loose no matter what you're doing.
