Zombie Spam Relay

After reading an article by Al Fasoldt, a syndicated tech columnist, about zombie spam relay bots, I searched this forum for advice on how to detect and possibly get rid of such infections. I didn't find a clear answer. Fasoldt says you cannot find nor erase them. Is that it? Is there nothing I can do? Please note that I don't know if I even have any, I am just being cautious. I turn my computer off, but do not use a power strip to completely kill the electrical supply. I can't help but think that doing so might harm my computer. My connection is DSL, and I have Wndows XP Home. Is there a way to at least identify if I have any such infections? Any advice, or better yet, any solutions? Thanks, Bo
