If you think you might be infected, or want to be sure you are not, post here
Read the 6 "pinned" posts at the top of the forum first.
As for keeping infections out, the main protections are:
1. Your firewall. Test its effectiveness here
2. An up-to-date virus scanner, and run regular scans.
3. Malware blockers. Nothing catches it all but SpywareBlaster is good, as is the
"immunise" function in Spybot Search & Destroy. If you feel like spending a little
money you can get real-time protection through SuperAntispyware too.
4. Malware scanners. Again nothing catches it all, so scan regularly with 2 or 3
of the free ones - AdAware, Spybot, SuperAntispyware for instance.
5. If you are paranoid, run a rootkit scanner - Sophos have a free one here
