Toshiba Laptop Passes All Sound & Audio Tests -Still No Sound!

I am trying to troubleshoot a friend's Toshiba laptop
which went soundless suddenly a few months ago. I have thoroughly checked practically
every place associated with sound inside the Control Panel. Windows XP reports that
every device works properly. The Device Manager and all Services appear running
OK. The CD drive and iTunes appear to function normally but there is still no sound.
I have even replaced the original Realtek HD Audio driver with a new one to no avail.
However, I found a clue when I tested the Voice Recording/Playback features. Even
though their associated tests were reported as passing by Windows XP, the microphone
test and playback test failed to cause the green column to register in response
to a
voice input or a playback output. In other words, normally these columns synchonize
with the volume of the voice input or the playback sound. Actually in my case, the
green column did attempt to move up a wee bit. I tend to think that there is a hardware
problem prior to the speakers. Since the machine does not belong to me, I try not
to open it up to examine the hardware yet. I would like to know if anyone has come
across such a no-sound problem.
Thanks for listening.
Julian
