Your friend probably blew out the preamp out on the motherboard.  Your options now 
are replacing the motherboard or better, installing a sound card into an open slot. 
 Your description of the connectors/adaptors is confusing so can't be sure of how 
it was connected, but I would bet that the outputs are damaged.  I would suggest 
posting to a hardware forum as this one is for software/Windows, and/or having a 
trusted shop diagnose it to see if it is hardware damage or software issues.
