Sounds like possibly something is wrong with an update and is not installing properly... 

I often use a program called dial-a-fix, it is successful and fixing update problems 
probably 95% of the time.  You may try it for good measure, I've never had it mess 
anything up.  Then go to the windows update site and search for, and install all 
the updates that you still need.  That's what I would do anyways.  You will see if 
any are failing.
